ORIS AQUIS NEW YORK HARBOR

The new limited edition Oris supports the Billion Oyster Project, a particularly ambitious nonprofit organization that aims to bring a billion oysters back to New York Harbor.

To date, the Billion Oyster Project has seeded 14.5 acres of New York Harbor, introducing some 75 million young oysters to their new home. This was a monumental effort involving more than 11,000 volunteers and 8,000 students.

Pete Malinowski, executive director and co-founder of the Billion Oyster Project, hopes to eventually involve more than a million people and bring back more than a billion oysters by 2035. It is promising to see organizations like Billion Oyster Project taking the initiative to restore, rather than preserve, natural habitats and processes. It is a project worth promoting.

A mature (live) oyster can filter as much as 50 gallons of water per day. Established oyster colonies are habitats for other life forms. In the pristine waters of New York prior to the Industrial Revolution, the filtration and ecosystems provided by oysters were only part of a whole. It was business as usual, as far as nature was concerned. But in our current climatic predicament, we need all the help we can get in purifying our waters.

The dial of the Oris Aquis immediately catches the eye. A special pearlized color with a pigmented background gives the watch a special touch.

As beautiful as the mother-of-pearl dial makes the watch, this Oris Aquis is seaworthy and up to 300 meters water resistance. A double-domed sapphire with an anti-reflective coating ironically keeps the mother-of-pearl from getting wet. Inside the watch is the Sellita-based Oris 733 caliber with its signature red rotor.
