Sinds 1924, toen CITIZEN zijn eerste zakhorloge uitbracht, wordt er binnen het bedrijf één ideaal doorgegeven: Wij maken horloges die een integraal onderdeel zijn van het leven van onze klanten. Opgericht in 1995, werd The CITIZEN bedacht als een merk dat dat ideaal zou belichamen.

Door technologieën op te nemen en te verfijnen die de drager plezier brengen, heeft The CITIZEN een leidende rol gespeeld in onze eindeloze zoektocht naar de essentie van het horloge. De uitdaging om het volgende ideaal te creëren, gaat door.

In het Japan van de jaren 1920 waren de meeste verkochte horloges zakhorloges die uit het buitenland werden geïmporteerd. Vastbesloten om een Japans concurrerend product te creëren, lanceerde het Shokosha Watch Research Institute, de voorloper van CITIZEN, zijn eigen zakhorloge in 1924. Als eerste product was het prachtig - maar het ontbrak aan een naam. Burgemeester van Tokio, Graaf Shinpei Goto, werd gevraagd om er een voor te stellen. De naam die hij bedacht was "CITIZEN", een uitdrukking van de hoop dat zoveel mogelijk mensen - burgers - het horloge lang zouden gebruiken en koesteren.
