"SEIKO PROSPEX The Naomi Uemura - 80th Anniversary Limited Edition"
Five years after the introduction of the first diver's watch from Seiko and Japan in 1965, Seiko launched a highly functional 'Diver's watch' in 1970. It had a revolutionary flowing case design, with an asymmetrical extension that protected the crown at the four o'clock position. With its very solid construction, 150 meters of water resistance, luminescent hands and indices, the 1970 Seiko made Divers a perfect watch for those who needed an exceptionally strong timepiece with optimal readability. The watch proved its reliability in the most extreme conditions we know on Earth. From 1974 to 1976, it was worn by Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura during his solo dog sledding trip from Greenland to Alaska. An expedition of 12,500 kilometers.
In 2021 it will be 80 years since Naomi Uemura was born. Seiko commemorates Uemura's life and achievements with a modern reinterpretation of the legendary diver's watch that accompanied him on his extraordinary expeditions.
Naomi Uemura Adventurer
Born in 1941, Naomi Uemura was still a young university student when he climbed his first mountain. By the age of 29 he had already conquered Kilimanjaro, Mont Blanc and Matterhorn. In 1970, he became the first Japanese mountaineer to reach the top of Mount Everest. Just three months later, he reached the top of Denali in Alaska (then known as Mt. McKinley), becoming the world's first adventurer to reach the highest peaks of all five continents. In 1984 he managed to climb the Denali during the winter. But Uemura disappeared during the descent and was never seen again. Highly regarded for his great modesty and his fabulous achievements, Uemura was awarded the prestigious Japanese National Honor Award shortly after his disappearance.
Dial
This commemorative watch mirrors the design of the 1970 original, but is thoroughly contemporary in execution. The subtle rough pattern on the dial is reminiscent of the mountainous terrain Uemura loved so much. Uemura was the first person in the world to reach the tops of the highest mountains on all five continents. The dial and bezel are done in the blue tones typical of the upper atmospheric layers of the earth. Shades that can only be seen by those who manage to make it to the roof of the world.
cabinet design
The sides of the case have been carefully polished and the watch has a steel strap with a modern sleek profile. The case has the characteristic asymmetrical shape that protects the crown at the 4 o'clock position.
Enhanced Specifications
The case has a super hard coating to protect the watch from scratches. The curved sapphire crystal is finished with an anti-reflective coating on the inside. This guarantees good readability from every angle. The watch has an improved water resistance up to 200 meters.
extra tire
The additionally supplied silicone strap has the 'train-track' pattern of the original..
Back cover
Uemura's name and serial number are engraved on the back.
Watch
This Naomi Uemura-inspired Limited Edition is powered by the 8L35 caliber, which was specially designed for diver's watches by the watchmakers at Shizukuishi Watch Studio in Northern Japan.
Limited Edition of 1,200 copies
Caliber 8L35
The 8L35 Seiko caliber with date display is a mechanical caliber. The watch automatically charges itself when worn by converting the wearer's arm and wrist movements into energy. Movement of the watch causes the mainspring of the watch to be wound. This spring is the energy source. Hand winding is also possible. When the watch is fully charged, it has an energy reserve of approximately 50 hours. The tick number of this automatic is 28,800 per hour and the watch has 26 jewels. The 8L caliber is manufactured entirely in-house.
