Icon Ludens source of inspiration for latest Astron GPS Solar
In 2012, Seiko took electronic watchmaking technology to a new level with the Astron GPS Solar: a watch that is able to connect to the GPS network and - at the touch of a button - adjust to any time zone with atomic clock precision* to adjust. All this solely on light energy that it generates itself. In 2021, Seiko will partner with game developer KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS to create an Astron watch that combines the Dual-Time 5X53 caliber with a design inspired by the iconic game character Ludens.
Astron GPS Solar and acclaimed Japanese game developer Hideo Kojima are natural partners. Just as Astron has pushed the boundaries of high-tech watchmaking with a continuous line of increasingly sophisticated calibres, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS has created a whole new genre of gaming in "DEATH STRANDING". It won "PC Game of the Year" at the Golden Joystick Awards 2020, one of the most prestigious awards in the games industry.
KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS is a creative studio in Tokyo headed by game maker Hideo Kojima. The studio's slogan is FROM SAPIENS TO LUDENS. The studio's first game, “DEATH STRANDING”, features world-renowned actors and was released for PlayStation® on November 8, 2019. The PC version followed on July 14, 2020. The title has received massive praise worldwide and has won numerous awards since its release.
The design breathes the spirit of Ludens in all facets
The design of this watch incorporates several design elements inspired by Ludens' suit. The pattern on the dial reflects the interwoven texture of his carbon face mask. Gold accents reference the metal parts of Luden's suit, as do the interlocking design of the two sub-dials. The iconic studio logo is printed at the 9 o'clock position as well as on the caseback. On the bezel, the UTC codes are depicted in the same signature font as the KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS logo; and the studio's FROM SAPIENS TO LUDENS signature is discreetly engraved on the edge of the bezel at the 6 o'clock position.
The watch connects to the GPS network up to twice a day to maintain its precision** and it automatically adjusts to daylight saving time***. When the wearer changes time zones, he or she simply presses a button and the hands move to the correct local time. This happens at lightning speed thanks to a system that moves the hour, minute and second hands independently of each other. Caliber 5X even gives the wearer the ability to instantly change the main time display from home to local time and vice versa.
The watch is offered in a limited edition of 1,000 copies and will be available in selected Seiko Boutiques and retailers in June 2021.
* If there are changes in the region / time zone / DST, manual selection may be required.
** When the watch face senses sunlight, the watch connects to the GPS satellite network and automatically adjusts to the correct time. If the watch cannot see light, it will remember the time of the last successful manual connection and try to receive the GPS signal again at the same time.
*** If the time zone adjustment is successful, the watch will display the local DST. This does not apply if the time zone is selected manually.
Seiko introduces the new 5X GPS Solar caliber. The world's most advanced GPS Solar caliber ever. The new Astron GPS Solar is faster, even easier to operate and offers better reception options. The energy consumption has also been optimised.
The Seiko 5X53 caliber is the prestigious analog GPS Solar DualTime caliber. With a simple push of a button, this watch can set itself to the correct time zone from anywhere in the world, and thus display the correct local time. On the dial, the GPS signal indicator shows whether the watch is connecting to the global GPS network. The watch also shows how many satellites the watch connects to. To determine the correct time zone, a connection is required with at least 4 satellites. When the watch is fully charged, the watch makes satellite connections with one satellite up to 2x a day to correct the time. This makes the 5X53 GPS Solar watch extremely accurate and the watch only has a deviation of 1 second per 100,000 years. If necessary, the local time can also be changed manually.
The smart Perpetual Calendar function ensures that the watch always shows the correct date up to the year 2100. The watch has an in-flight mode, the daylight saving time can be adjusted automatically and a second time can be set. The second time is displayed in a 12h window with a separate AM/PM indicator. With the TimeTransfer function, the display of the two times can be switched with a simple operation.
The built-in watch micro-GPS receiver consumes so little energy that all functions function optimally on light energy generated by the Solar dial.
