Astron’s Solar GPS Technologie

Seiko developed an automatic system for Astron GPS Solar that enables the watch to automatically adjust to the local time once a day thanks to the GPS time signal. The amount of light is analyzed via a hidden sensor. After observing strong sunlight for 5 seconds, the watch contacts a GPS satellite to receive the time signal. If the weather conditions are not suitable, the watch will remember when it last successfully received a time signal and attempt to reconnect automatically at that time.

Making contact with satellites orbiting about 20,000 km above the Earth requires a significant amount of energy. The Astron GPS Solar is equipped with a unique GPS module that has been specially developed for the watch and consumes only 20% of the energy that other GPS devices use. This allows the watch to run entirely on the power of light, without ever needing a new battery. Under the watch's bezel is a special ring antenna that, in combination with the ceramic in the bezel, optimizes signal reception. Thanks to this ring antenna, the Astron has been able to obtain its slim, elegant shape.
