A symbol of hope
Oris introduces the third watch, made in collaboration with the Carl Brashear Foundation, and the first, powered by Oris' own Caliber 401, a highly resistant five-day automatic.
"Carl's is an extraordinary heritage, and we are incredibly proud to share and support the foundation."
“Together with the Carl Brashear Foundation, we hope that every time someone who wears this new watch looks at it, they are reminded to never give up and keep going, no matter how insurmountable the challenges ahead may seem. "
A watch with a big heart
De Oris Carl Brashear Cal. 401 Limited Edition is powered by a new Oris movement of its own. The new watch is set in 40mm bronze, a material chosen to symbolize not only the diving helmets Carl wore during his career as a U.S. Navy Master Diver, but also because it is a metal that will tell its own story. Bronze is a natural material that patinates when it reacts with oxygen in the air and moisture from the skin. Over time, it will take on a unique finish, like a visual chronicle of the wearer's own life who wears the watch.
Inside, it's the automatic Oris Caliber 401. Based on the Caliber 400 launched last year, it was designed from the ground up by Oris' own watchmakers. Not only is it more accurate than a stopwatch (within -3 to +5 seconds per day), but it also solves many of the mechanical problems of our time by offering an increased level of anti-magnetism, a five-day power reserve, and an extended 10-year warranty.
Oris Caliber 401 differs from Caliber 400 by a small seconds at 6 o'clock, an Oris signature. It is a movement designed to overcome the blows of life - a timeless symbol of the spirit Carl Brashear has shown throughout his life of service.
The watch also features a navy-inspired blue dial, a uni-directional rotating bronze bezel with an embossed diving scale, and a custom-designed, handcrafted, moisture-wicking woven elastic nylon webbing strap produced for this watch by Erika's Originals.
Push for change
As part of our mission to bring change for the better, Oris has partnered with the Carl Brashear Foundation, bringing hope to many.
"It's not a sin to be beaten. It's a sin to lie down." These are the words of Carl Brashear, one of the 20th century's most enduring figures of triumph in adversity. Carl overcame numerous challenges, both due to his background and later disability, to become the United States Navy's first African-American diver and first amputee Master Diver. He is a man of honor and an inspiration to people all over the world.
In 2015, as part of our mission to bring Change for the Better, Oris partnered with the Carl Brashear Foundation, which was founded in his memory and continues his legacy. Since then it has been a privilege for us to work with the foundation and in particular with Carl's son Phillip and his family. Now we are excited to announce a third watch to bear his name, the Oris Carl Brashear Cal. 401 Limited Edition, the first watch to be powered by the new Oris Caliber 401, a powerful automatic.
The Carl Brashear Foundation uses Carl's story to inspire people to never give up. Born into a poor farming community, Carl overcame racism, a lack of education and, after an accident while on duty, a disability to achieve his ambitions. His story was featured in the movie Men of Honor, starring Oscar-winning actors Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert DeNiro.
Funds raised from the sale of Oris Carl Brashear watches have supported countless veterans and vulnerable people, giving them hope and helping them achieve their goals.
"Carl Brashear is one of the 20th century's most enduring figures of triumph in adversity."
