DIAMANT CART
When referring to the carat count of a diamond, it refers to the weight of the stone. (Unlike carat gold, where the term is used to refer to the amount of pure gold.) Each carat weighs exactly 200 milligrams, although most jewelers will refer to it as 100 points. This is because this point system for diamonds makes it possible to represent weight to the nearest hundredth of a milligram. Just compare a carat to a euro: where 1 euro consists of 100 cents, 1 carat weight consists of 100 points.
- 1 carat (also called carat weight) weighs 200 mg and represents 100 points.
- 1 point weighs 2 mg and represents 0.01 carat.
- 1 mg diamond refers to a stone of 0.005 carats and 0.5 points.
- Thus, a diamond of 0.6 carats weighs 120 mg and is equivalent to 60 points.
MAGIC SIZES
The higher the carat weight, the rarer the stone and the higher the price. Note that even though there hardly has to be any visible difference between a diamond of 0.99 and 1 carat, you will have to pay a significantly higher price for the latter. This has everything to do with the so-called "Magic Sizes. These are sought-after carat weights, such as 0.5, 0.75 and 1. And as is usually the case, popularity comes at a price.
THE VALUE OF A DIAMOND
With "Carat" alone, we are not there yet. As part of the 4 C's, this is only one of the four factors that determine the total diamond value (and thus price). Similarly, the color of the diamond is also a measure to determine the overall quality of the stone. We will cover this factor in the next blog in the series on the 4 C's of diamonds!
